Franz D. Hensel-Riveros is a political scientist converted to history, or at least he likes to think so.  He did a B.A. in Political Science, and then he obtained one in history.  Later on, he thought an M.A. in Anthropology might be useful to write and think historically.  Although he was right, he ended up doing history, telling tales, and imagining things with words –preferably documented.

One of those things I'm trying to imagine is my dissertation –here the "third person" stopped.  I'm interested in the fantastic and intercontinental debate around the "Latin" or "Hispanic" character of nineteenth-century America.  It seems that after the revolutionary wave more than scattered nations were in the making: a continent was also in construction.  My dissertation tells this story, and the fundamental struggles about the past that all of that entailed.

I also happened to have written a book, edited a couple of collective volumes, and participated in different journals and collective works on, most of all, very homogeneous subjects like subjectivity, autobiography and the writing of history, early-nineteenth century republic, and heterodox experts who thought they might save a country through thrift.

Soy profesor principal del programa de historia de la Universidad del Rosario. Estudié ciencia política e historia y luego hice una maestría en antropología social, aunque especialmente enfocada en antropología histórica, en la Universidad de los Andes. Actualmente hago mi doctorado en la Universidad de Texas en Austin.

Mi trabajo se ha centrado especialmente en el siglo XIX como terreno privilegiado de surgimiento de escrituras de la historia y en descrifrar algunas de las herramientas y lenguajes centrales para la construcción del orden político decimonónico. En mi primer libro exploré las relaciones entre república y moral entre 1821 y 1851. La edición crítica de Historia de una Alma de Jose María Samper me permitió entender la centralidad de la escritura autobiográfica en el siglo XIX mientras varios articulos y algunos compilaciones me han permitido urdir un poco más la trama y la "textura" de un siglo que, quizá por su aparente cercanía y cercano aire de familia nos sigue siendo aún esquivo en su comprensión. 

Actualmente me encuentro trabajando en la disputa entre América Latina e Hispana en el siglo XIX, documentando el papel central que diversos intelectuales en Europa y América jugaron en tal proceso.
